Cleopatra's Bling - Aegis ring

BrandCleopatra's Bling

Designer, Olivia was born a wanderer. From childhood, surrounded by trinkets, crystals and her treasure chest. Cleopatra’s Bling was born from an adoration of travel, the etherial, and the symbolic. A fusion of eastern allure and western style. Dreamed up in Paris, she moved to Turkey to learn the art of adornment in the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul. Olivia now resides between Istanbul, Paris and Melbourne. She creates jewellery with emotional and historical relevance, dipping into the collective memory, all while respecting ancient jewellery-making traditions.

Design:

The Aegis Ring is crafted from six golden Gorgoneion medallions arranged in a wreath around the finger. Both Athena and Zeus are said to have carried an aegis on their person. Athena’s aegis is often depicted as a shield with the face of the monstrous gorgon upon it, with Homer writing in the Iliad that it “produced a sound as from a myriad roaring dragons”. Virgil writes that in the blacksmith Hephaestus’ workshop the aegis is repaired and shined, “a fearsome thing with a surface of gold like scaly snake-skin, and the linked serpents and the Gorgon herself upon the goddess's breast”.

The Aegis provides protection and power to Athena, and the Gorgoneion is worn today as part of that same tradition.
